this box was made 1841-57 because the label says: By appointment
to Her Majesty and H.R.H. Prince Albert.

- It is an exceptional
for condition & completeness for it's 156+ years of age

- The tray has 12 slots for their fine
Full pan size watercolor paint blocks.
- This box has what
appears to be all Winsor Newton paint blocks ,
- Some of the antique
paint blocks are nearly whole
- while others are
cracked and or used.
- It is amazing
that these colors are still around considering the years of age.

- These are the
exact colors that painters like JMW Turner and other luminary
artists used in the early 1800's

- Also original is the three well porcelain
palette with the Winsor Newton logo on the back and the water
glass of Winsor Newton design. Both original to the box.

- In addition there are items many other
items:
- Over 12 different colors:
- An original water glass
- An original palette to
the box Marked "Winsor Newton"
- A few pieces of Conte'
crayons: white & black , also a graphite stick.
- A dip pen for a very fine
line
- The original Key that
works the lock -
- A small quill brush worn
to the nub.
- A Chinese ink stick
- A pencil & brush tray
hidden below the color tray.
- And a few odd items: pen
nib and a leather charcoal blender (known as a stump)

- This is a wonderful
Early Victorian Paint kit the paint and the pallet that lift
out to reveal storage space for pencils and supplies.

- The bottom drawer
opens to reveal several items and is a good place to store small
sketch paper.
- The whole outer
box is made of solid Mahogany- the inside is fitted with boxwood.

- There are some
scratches and a few paint stains here and there inside and out;
all lending authentic character to this 140 or so year old antique.

- Everything is
as shown in photos.
- It measures 9
inch wide x 7 deep x 3 high approximately

- The photo above
shows all the compartments open and the paillette with the 38
Rathbone Place address
- The palette has the same address
as the Label on the inside of the lid of the box which means
it is original to the box.

- A beautiful Trade
card in the top of the box announces that they have a royal warrant
"seal of approval"
- The date 1861
or earlier is estimated by the label mentioning Prince Albert
who passed away in late 1861 and later boxes he is listed as
the "Late Prince Albert" or replaced with their children.
- " Her Majesty
refers to Queen Victoria.

- Some paint blocks are
nearly whole but most show patina of age, cracks , partial blocks
etc.

- The protective ebony banding
on the top edge of the box has some cracks and has variations
in color and small piece missing..

- This box has patina from
use, some scratches, nicks
and paint stains here
and there.

- All serve to give it authentic
patina. A wonderful box , lovingly used by the artist.
